Read the oral history recorded by local resident Mrs. Alice K. Gallenstein, preserving the memories of the late Mrs. Christine McNutt-Maher—who knew the last living members of the Bierbower family of Maysville.

The Bierbower family of Maysville, Kentucky, used their home to assist freedom seekers—providing shelter and aiding crossings over the Ohio River to the North. Today, the family is proud of their legacy.

The Bierbower family genealogy and family tree span generations. Documentation is available for public review. The Bierbower family tree may be accessed through FamilySearch and Ancestry.com.

The Bierbower-Maher house is the home of the National Underground Railroad Museum. As part of ongoing research, the museum has connected the Bierbower family in Kentucky and Ohio to illuminate potential UGRR connections throughout the Ohio River Valley.

The Ohio River Valley is known as the borderland and was the most contentious area where national events unfurled. See why the Bierbower Family history and the history of other individuals and their work as freedom fighters is important.
